When Zorawar Singh, the Master of Bhairarghad, set out to settle ancient scores with Bhavanighad, be did •it with such thoroughness that the entire place was smashed and burnt out. In this general massacre, however, Doctor Shanker, friend of the latter, managed to save the twins who were the heirs to Bhavanighad. Madho Singh, their loyal servant, also managed to survive this disastrous debacle.

The twins, Vijay and Vikram, though born in bondage of flesh, were operated upon and separated by Doctor Shanker. But be could only divide their bodies; he had no power over their sensations. But all through his existence, Vikram's emotional life was only an echo of Vijay's, and, however, much he struggled ' against it, he could not lead a life, independent of his brother's.

Doctor Shanker, knowing Zorawar's implacable hatred, had Vijay brought up in the City by his sister and Vikram deep in the forest by Madho Singh. Thus the twins grew up in different places, one in the city. nurtured in gentility, and the other in the forest brought up in primitive conditions and frustrated by vicarious emotions.

When they grew up to manhood, the Doctor brought them together and solemnly charged them with the sacred duty of avenging the family dishonour caused by Zorawar Singh. The twins swore on the blood of their people that they would not rest until Zorawar had paid the penalty.

Zorawar Singh who was waxing on the ill-gotten gains, happened to get a glimpse of Ranjana, a City girl, loved by Vijay. Imprisoning her unyielding father in his own castle, Zora war went himself to her house to woo and to win her; but aware of his arrival, Ranjana, with the help of Vijay, managed to escape to the forest abode of the twins.

And thus began an idyllic existence for the lovers which, however, was marred by Vikram's over-increasing misery and jealousy. Vijay's love for Ranjana had its inevitable effect on Vikram and he suffered agonies from a feeling of love which was not entirely his own. This came to such a pitch that, losing his reserve, he behaved in an indecorous manner towards Ranjana, which culminated into a savage dagger-fight
between the twins.

Unable to bear this quarrel, Ranjana secretly left the forest dwelling; but she was caught by Zorawar and his men who were on the lookout for her. And,  diabolically cunning as he was, he sent a message to Vijay that Ranjana was in the hands of Zorawar.

Unable to secure the help of Vikram, who was seething with anger and resentment, Vijay himself went to Zorawar, disguised as a jeweller. Unsuspectingly Zorawar was charmed with him and his jewels and insisted that he stayed on until his marriage with Ranjana. That night Ranjana and Vijay attempted to escape, but were caught. Vijay, who would not reveal where his other twin was, was whipped mercilessly in the presence of Doctor Shanker.

Vikram, experiencing vicariously the sensation of being whipped, was glad Vijay was being beaten to death. Horrified Madho Singh wanted to go to Vijay's help, but Vikram attempted to stop him from going by taking out his revolver. All the accumulated wrath of Madho, because of Vikram's continued sulky behaviour, now broke on Vikram's head. He poured his anger in hot words and left during Vikram to shoot him. Brought to a scene of his own un-brotherly conduct, Vikram also started to help Vijay.

Vijay was pronounced dead by the Doctor and Zorawar granted him permission to take away the body. This was only a ruse on the Doctor's part. Once in his own house, safe from the prying eyes of Zorawar and his men, he managed to bring Vijay back to consciousness.

Vikram went straight to Zorawar's castle. Here Zorawar who get into a sword-fight with him, mortally wounded him by treachery and deceit. But Vijay also came there and Zorawar's fate was sealed. He could not help Vijay's lightning attack and fell as ingloriously as he had lived.
