Karmu, the darling of the tribal village Hutupgaon, played hi mandal, sang and danced till late at night, beckoning a sweetheart yet unknown to him. Soma responded his calls.

But the damsel with a body as smooth as a paddy stalk and eyes as large as a jackfruit seed was someone else, not of this world-a fairy, as Karmu's mother said, "Then one day this celestial beauty did meet Kamru-of all the places in the market itself-challenging the world with the Jingle of her anklets. She was Nanki daughter of the famed Vaid Mahtu of Sukarhattu village. The beats of the mandal and the tinklets of the anklets mixed into a rhythm. They parted with a promise to meet on Karmu. Their impatient love however could not wait. They began meeting secretly and on the night of Karma Karmu & Nanki pledged to live and die together. Then on the Shivpuja night they crossed the fire into wedlock. But Nanki wished a ceremonial marriage and to go to her lovers place from her father's residence only as a given away bride.

When Mehtu learnt about the secret affairs of his daughter he locked her in the house and drove away Karmu's mother who had come to propose marriage of the lovers. All daughters of Mahtu had been married to rich farmers. Karmu was no match to them. Karmu could not bear his mother's humiliation. He went to avenge her insult and was beaten to near death. But his violent snub did not lessen the madness of his love. Karmu at the instance of his friend Tirthu, went to the city to earn for twenty ploughs. Nanki could not remain separated for long and fled to Karmu.

Their happy meeting had not even shaped to a full smile when Mahtu searching for his daughter reached Karmu's residence. The sudden encounter nearly killed Karmu. Tirthu carried him to hospital. His life was saved. But Karmu was not happy. At the annual function of the R.P. Hospital Ranchi, he melodiously asked why the people did not give him poison. The people however arranged for him a potion of nectar.

Karmu was chosen to participate in the Bihar State's entry in Republic Day Celebrations at Delhi. As the dry dust of the scorched fields was pervading the stage, Nanki came with the speed of lightening and joined Karmu. The met only for a fleeting moment and Nanki was again separated for being wedded to Birju, the son of an adivasi Raja. But were Karmu calls fruitless. Did the longing of love die? You will have to see it for yourself.
