Somewhere in the wide world was a town with hills around and there lived Sundari, a girl of the hilly tribe very charming, commanding attention of the youths, defiant and yet noble.

Pritam was an army officer recently transferred to this town. Although warned to keep away from the bewitching damsels of the nomadic type, Pritam and Sundari somehow got to know each other. Struck by her beauty, he acted on a suggestion from her to make a slip in his duty and allowed Sundari to escape. On another occasion, Moti who became desperate at seeing Sundari paying attention to the New Comer Pritam, challenged his colleague and forced him to a fight. At the end of the encounter, Pritam’s blade was found in Moti’s body. Sundari realized what the incident meant and she took him away in the hills.

Here Pritam found bandits as his company but he would not join them. Where should he go now, with a prize on his head-a deserter and a murderer. He saw Rahu, the leader of the gang, flirting with his betrothed girl Sundari and his blood boiled. Another murder at his hands and he becomes the leader of the gang. The prize for his head soared high.
He pleaded in vain before Sundari to go to some far off lands, but she would not agree for fear of his life. The gang faced starvation as Pritam will not have any more looting and murdering. He then parted with a priceless watch, the last moment of his former life. Sundari took it away in town and did not return until it was very late.

When she did come back, Pritam was impatient and shaking with rage, for in his ears were poured tales of Sundari’s faithlessness. Sundari was true to herself and true to Pritam. When Pritam thrashed her in anger, her sprit revolted in protest and she fled from where she came-to the theatrical company.

Pritam, when he was left alone, saw what he had done. He was struck with remorse and to make amends, he risked going the town and seeing her. But some events happened there which infuriated him so much that he drove his dagger into her. But he could not save himself too. Both dropped together, arm in arm, for a journey beyond, Sundari whispering her last word of love “Pritam.”
