The second Assamese talkie Indramalati was directed and produced by Jyotiprasad Agarwala under the banner of Chitralekha Movietone. Jyotiprasad arranged a special show for invited guests to watch the film at Sati Talkies of Guwahati on Sunday at 4 pm on 30th July, 1939. The film was released on 1st August in Sati Talkies. Jyotiprasad made the film on a shoe-string budget of Rs.15,000.  He chose Taalbari, his family land, just three miles away from his hometown -Tezpur as the location for the outdoor shooting of his film. Jyotiprasad contacted the Aurora Film Corporation of Calcutta in the month of May, 1938 for the technicians and equipment. Accordingly, Aurora Film Corporation sent G.P. Ghosh as cameraman and one assistant with a Debrie Camera and one dozen reflectors on 11th March,1939. Adapted from his own story, the film Indramalati is a romantic story, replete with patriotic elements. Set in a small town of Tezpur, the film, a simple love story between Indrajit Barua and Malati, shows how Indrajit wins Malati, after fighting a long battle with Chandiram, a rich man’s son.

Jyotiprasad was the screenplay writer, lyricist, music director, art director, costume designer and editor of the film. Legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika played the role of a shepherd and also lent his voice in the film. The song Biswa bijoy nava juwan was composed by Jyotiprasad and sung by the twelve-year-old Bhupen Hazarika. Other songs in the film, such as Mure mon bonote toi ki bahi bojali, Rupore panite xunore panchoi/ Meli de, enriched the film.

The film features Manubhiram Barua as Indrajit Barua, Phani Sarma as Lalit, Rakheswari Baruah as Malati, Thanu Ram Borah as Chandiram and Upa Kataki as Upina.
