"Gujaratan" as the title indicates is the story of a true daughter of Gujarat, the land of tolerant and talented people. Anjali, the daughter of Sheth Subodhchandra is a highly cultured western-educated girl. Yet, she is the image of an ideal Indian woman. Whereas her mother Ramila being new rich is a snob. Anjali is in love with Prabhakar who is poor, but a hardworking young man. Ramila does not approve of their marriage. Somehow Sheth Subodhchandra prevails upon his wife and gets her consent for the marriage on the condition that after the wedding, Prabhakar will stay with them. On the Other side Prabhakar's father Prabhudas feels that his son has surrendered his freedom and self-respect yet forced by unavoidable circumstances, Prabhudas has to ask for Sheth Saab's mercy. He is insulted by Ramila and driven out. Anjali as a protest against the inhuman treatment meted out by her mother leaves the house. But Prabhakar is forced to stay behind. In order to uphold the prestige of her father-in-law, Anjali goes to Prabhudas's village, devotes herself to the service of the villagers. As luck would have it, Anjali is pitted against yet another problem. Anjali's sister-in-law who is jealous of her, provokes Dipubha, a village goonda, to ruin the ideal image of Anjali which she has carved in minds of the people.
