Devdas, a landowner’s son is in love with his childhood sweetheart, Paro, who is his poor neighbour’s daughter. Because of their class differences, their relationship is not accepted and Devdas is sent to Calcutta to complete his education. In the meantime, Paro’s father arranges her marriage with an old but rich widower. Although in love with Devdas, she abides by her father’s choices and silently takes upon the suffering. In Calcutta, Devdas befriends a prostitute called Chandra and takes to drinking when he hears about Paro’s marriage. Chandra falls for Devdas and tries to help him out of his misery, but is unable to do so. When Parbati hears about Devdas’s condition, she decides to visit him. But he tells her he will come to her in his hour of need and sends her back. When he senses his end is near, he keeps his promise and goes to visit Parbati. In his remorse, after a long train journey, his life ends in front of his true love’s house.
