Prem Seth, a dangerous criminal, has cast his eye on the beautiful dancing girl Reshma, little knowing that she is madly in love with his own trusted lieutenant Govinda. Nor is he aware that she is the daughter of his arch rival, Jamunadas. Whilst still a baby, Jamunadas had entrusted Reshma to the care of Shola Begum who kept a dancing establishment.

Lonely years having elapsed, Jamunadas feels the urge to get back his daughter, and finds that she prefers the penniless Govinda to all his riches. Govinda learns that his Reshma has spurned her father, and appeals to her not to lose the opportunity.  Govinda has no answer to her question : what would be have done under similar circumstances?

In their own ways, both Govinda and Reshma try to buy her freedom from Shola Begum. Reshma agrees to go to Prem Seth's house and dance for his personal entertainment, a proposal she had earlier rejected with contempt. Govinda undertakes Prem Seth's dangerous mission to rescue one of his men from Jamunadas clutches. Prem Seth had planned to liquidate both Govinda and Jamunadas at one stroke, but in the nick of time, Govinda realises what is happening, and the plot fails. Govinda is too late; to save her honour, Reshma plunges a dagger into her heart. In blind fury, Govinda stabs Prem Seth and as he lifts up the dying Reshma, Prem Seth manages to extract the dagger from his body and fling into Govinda's back.

Both of their lives are ebbing away as Govinda manages to carry Reshma on his motorcycle to the temple where they were pledged to be married. In their dying moments, they take the seven auspicious steps so they may leave the world happily as man and wife united in life, united in death.
