The young Roopa goes on a trip to the village with her grandmother. They meet the wealthy but ailing Rai Sahab who reminds her grandmother of a promise made by her husband to marry Roopa with his grandson Rajju. When Rai Sahab suffers a heart attack, she is unable to refuse his wish to see his grandson married. The children are married, but because of their young age hardly comprehend what has been done to them. When Roopa’s mother finds out she is incensed and decides to remove any trace of the marriage from Roopa’s memory.

Roopa is given a modern education and grows up to be a beautiful woman. When holidaying in Shimla with her friends she meets the suave Ashok. After a whirlwind romance, the two decide to get married. But Roopa’s cousin Sonia, who wants to marry Ashok herself, reveals the truth of her past marriage to him.
Ashok is not deterred, and wants to proceed with the engagement. But disaster strikes when Roopa is served a legal notice on her engagement day by the late Rai Sahab’s men. Roopa undergoes a crisis between the choice to respect the sanctity of marriage and her love for Ashok. She is also ostracized by society due to her past. A conflicted Roopa lashes out at Ashok and breaks off her relationship with him. She returns to her grandmother who convinces her to respect her marriage. But the final twist is yet to come. When she revisits the site of her marriage, it is revealed that Rajju is in fact Ashok.
