Four men and four women live across the road from each other in hostels. They are constantly at loggerheads with each other, playing pranks in a steadily escalating feud. One of the men, Lalu, has a mischievous sister-in-law who enjoys their antics and helps them along. She also tries to smooth things over when they seem to be getting out of hand.

Gradually a series of accidental meetings lead to the men and women falling in love. The two lead characters Shyam and Anuradha, however, are reluctant to admit their feelings for each other. Their chance meetings lead to further episodes where one humiliates the other, widening the rift. Ultimately, they are forced to reveal their love to each other and the men and women form four happy couples by the end of the film.

Noted as one of the most popular comedies of its time, Basanta Bilap is still remembered for its soundtrack, which included immortal gems like Ami Miss Calcutta 1976 and Legeche legeche aagoon.
